This article highlights the theoretical foundations of problem-based learning in the process of primary education and its importance in the formation of independent thinking in students. The pedagogical essence of developing critical thinking, creative thinking and reflection skills in students through problem situations is analyzed from a scientific and theoretical point of view. Based on the concepts of Dewey, Vygotsky and modern international research (PISA, PIRLS), the role of problem-based learning in the formation of independent decision-making and reasoning skills in students is shown.
