Abstract

Carboxylate ligands are widely used as organic building blocks in the formation of metal-organic and coordination materials. This work provides a theoretical analysis of the potential of organic compounds-derived from the functionalization of indene with phthalic anhydride and containing both carboxyl and carbonyl groups-to serve as precursors for coordination materials. The study examines the ability of the -COOH/–COO⁻ moiety to engage in monodentate, chelate, or bridging coordination with metal ions, the role of the ketonic carbonyl group as an additional O-donor, and the influence of the fused π-system of the indene core on the resulting material structure. Zn(II), Cu(II), and Fe(III) ions are analyzed as model metal centers. It is demonstrated that a single carboxylate-indene derivative cannot be equated to a classic polytopic MOF linker; however, its application as a co-ligand, terminal ligand, functional modifier, or precursor for the synthesis of more complex, multifunctional ligands is well-justified.
